1) Release of Report on Domestic Violence against Women with disabilities and the Girl Child- 16th February 2005

Domestic Violence

This survey focused on identifying the various levels and dimensions in which women with disabilities faced discrimination and violation. Using a social constructionist perspective on both disability and violation of rights, amounting to violence, the survey focused on denial of rights and domestic violence as having become a norm, a part of these women's everyday life. The study revealed massive violence against Women and Girl Child with disabilities. They are victims of range of abuse and discrimination that they encounter in their families and in public life. Majority of those interviewed revealed that Women and Girl child with disabilities are denied their basic rights such as food, personal grooming social isolation and lack of medical attention. They face violence ranging from sexual abuse, physical assault, mental and emotional abuse.

2) Access Audit Surveys

Status of Physical Access in Orissa
Status of Attitudinal Access in Orissa

Status of Physical in Public and Private Institutions in Orissa.
The Access Audit will present and provide facts and figures on the status and level of physical access for People With Disabilities (PWD) in the state of Orissa. The audit is the first to be conducted in the entire state and presents the latest account (till February 2005) on the status and level of physical access in public and private institutions
For instance all of 19 PWDs who were interviewed within the institutions decried the poor status of access in these institutions. The study revealed that 84% of the State institutions in Orissa are inaccessible to PWDs. Access to public utility and communication facilities are entirely missing in these key institutions.
Status of Attitudinal Access in Public and Private Institutions in Orissa.
This audit provides information on the status of attitudinal access situation for people with disabilities in main public and private institutions in state of Orissa. Being the first to be conducted in Orissa, it makes recommendations and benchmarks upon which future improvements on attitudinal access for PWDs can be made and measured. The audit exercise revealed a glaring situation of attitudinal access among key public and private institutions in Orissa. These institutions are not aware of disability issues, they are irresponsive and insensitive to the needs and experiences of persons with disability. It was shocking that many of them have not employed PWDs in spite of the law providing for job reservation, they do not have schemes for PWDs. Their perceptions and knowledge of disability was disheartening.
