UNCRPD Article - 1 & 2.

Purpose of the Convention (Article 1)

This Convention tells what countries have to do to ensure that disabled people have the same rights as everybody else.

​

Who are persons with disabilities and other definitions (Article 1 and 2)

​

  • Persons with disabilities are those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which may hinder their participation in society, unlike other people.

  • Communication refers to the modes in which disabled people can talk and understand information, for example, computers, audio or Braille.

  • Language includes any way people communicate with each other including sign language.

  • Discrimination means being treated unfairly in any aspect of life because you are disabled.

  • Reasonable accommodation means necessary and appropriate modifications or adjustments to ensure the inclusion of disabled people.
