Purpose of the Convention (Article 1)

This Convention tells what countries have to do to ensure that disabled people have the same rights as everybody else.

Who are persons with disabilities and other definitions (Article 1 and 2)

Persons with disabilities are those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which may hinder their participation in society, unlike other people.

Communication refers to the modes in which disabled people can talk and understand information, for example, computers, audio or Braille.

Language includes any way people communicate with each other including sign language.

Discrimination means being treated unfairly in any aspect of life because you are disabled.

Reasonable accommodation means necessary and appropriate modifications or adjustments to ensure the inclusion of disabled people.
