Equal Recognition before law and Access to Justice (Articles 12 & 13)

Disabled people have the same rights under law as other people in all areas of life

Disabled people should be supported to make sure they get these rights.

Disabled people have the same right to make their own decisions about important things as everyone else.

Disabled people should have the proper support they need while making decisions.

If a person really does need someone else to speak for them, there should be rules for allowing this.

Disabled people can:

own or inherit property
-
control their own financial affairs

have access to loans like everyone else

Property of disabled people should not be wrongfully taken away from them

Disabled people have the same rights to go to court, take other people to court or take part in what happens in courts as anyone else.

Special training should be promoted for courts, police and prison staff to ensure effective justice.
